5.0 out of 5 stars Ear bud bake-offNovember 8, 2011

As my wife and 'tween-ager are virtual Bermuda Triangles for ear buds, they eventually lose/break all theirs and subsequently borrow mine with the same outcome. Thus I recently found I needed to buy three new sets of ear buds at once. I bought three different sets off Amazon, all having decent reviews: JVC HAFX67R, JVC Xtreme Xplosives, and JLab Audio JBuds J2. Today I sat down to compare them all side-by-side. In the interim, a fairly new set of Apple buds resurfaced, so I had four sets for the bake-off. Caveats: First I am 40-something, with a few too many years of loud music, so I decidedly do NOT have audiophile ears. Second, I tested these right out of the package. Many reviews discuss the need to break in a set of drivers, so this could skew the results. Third, all of them sounded pretty good. I would have been satisfied with any of the new ones, so any negative remarks are for comparison's sake. Note, I tested the buds with an Apple Nano gen4, with music I favor, specifically acoustic/folk and hard rock, in both cases somewhat "busy", having a wide range of frequencies going in the mix. I have a strong preference for drivers that provide good presence and clarity in mid-range, and producing clear overtones without being too bright or tinny.

Results: Fourth place, Apple buds. These sounded somewhat muffled vs. the clarity of the others, and they are really uncomfortable and fall out easily when positioned for best sound. Third place, JLab Audio JBuds J2. Very comfortable fit, with good sound isolation and solid bass, but still sounded somewhat muffled vs. the other two new sets. Close second place, JVC Xtreme Xplosives. Again great fit with good sound isolation. As advertised, these offer very pronounced bass, exaggerated even. Surprisingly, this is accomplished without any sense of booming/crashing, and they still provide very good presence and clarity. Also, to my surprise, the Xtreme Xplosives seemed substantially more sensitive (i.e. louder) than all the others for the same volume setting. In the end, I thought these sounded slightly muffled compared to the winner. However this subtle difference is likely an artifact of the specifics of my own ear and taste, and could change after the drivers are broken in. I originally picked the Xtreme Xplosives out for my wife, who favors urban and R&B music having heavier bass than my stuff, and I think these will be absolutely perfect. First place (for me): JVC HAFX67R. Bottom line, these just sounded significantly better than all the others to me, based on my preferences. Good bass, and very rich presence and clarity. They do a great job with intimate acoustic music and busy hard rock, and I couldn't detect much if any distortion with them turned up quite loud. So, this is the set I'm keeping for myself -- at least until the girls come along and swipe them again.

Final thought: So JVC wins on sound quality. However, I've owned several pair of the (cheaper) JVC Micro HD buds, and really enjoyed them right up to the moment when a channel stopped working -- far sooner than I expected. So I will be watching closely to see how long these JVC buds last, a possible Achilles heel for the JVC products...

Ordered these for my birthday and I am more than satisfied. They feel great in my ear and i can wear them for hours without any discomfort. The sound quality is great and these things get LOUD. The only con i might report after having them for a couple days is that the driver casing seems to be made out of plastic but from what i can tell it's not flimsy. For the price you can't beat them!

After reading all these amazing reviews about this particular pair of headphones, I was more than happy to purchase a pair for myself. I was elated when they arrived, only to be put down by the fact that when I used them, there would be a static noise persisting in the background. This white noise broke the deal for me.

To start with, when I got these headphones I was very excited to use them because of the great reviews on Amazon, and I was happy with the headphones. It wasn't until later that I realized there was a white noise I heard in the backround (important to keep reading) and I was starting to get annoyed. I was going to give them a rating of like 3 stars because of this but when I pluggend them in to my Itouch, instead of my phone, the sound quality was AMAZING! So then I plugged it into other things and the sound was still AMAZING! It was just my phone that had the problem with the white noise. I looked into it and found out that it was actually the headjack, that the headphones plugged into, that actually made the white noise; for those that complained about it, it was probably their headjacks as well. If that wasn't the problem, they were probably one of just a very small percent that got a bad product. THAT'S WHY WE HAVE SOMETHING CALLED A WARRANTY, IT ALLOWS SOMEONE TO GET A PRODUCT THAT IS DEFECTIVE, REPLACED, THE PEOPLE THAT COMPLAINED ABOUT IT WERE JUST MORONS. If that was not enough to make you want to buy these then keep reading, if it is, then stop and buy it already.

Secondly, the price of this product compared to other products, with the sound is amazing. You don't know how many people told me their in ear headphones had the most bass and sounded the best, let's just say a lot. And after hearing mine, they became proven wrong. These headpones by far have the best bass and sound quality out of almost all the in ear headpones I've heard. In fact I have a friend that had "amazing" in ear beats by Dre and I wanted to compare them to mine. Well after listening to his and mine with the same bass song, Basshead, they sounded identical, and those headphones were over $100! Now he doesn't listen to them anymore. Also, if you are thinking about buying a little bit more expensive in ear headphones because you think more money means better quality, DON'T DO IT. I don't know how JVC did it but thet made and amazing pair of headphones for a fair price.

These are one of the better sets of earphones for the price. They have good enough mids and highs, and of course great bass. Sound isolation is also good because of the nature of being in-ear. Highly recommended.

I love the sound reproduction, they sound better than the 100$ Bose earphones.
They look a little bulky, but they are very comfortable.

I've been through prob over 10 sets of headphones/earbuds. These..I LOVE. I just got them and the fit exceptionally well. The sound is freakishly superb (much better than $80+ Skullcandy Aviator headphones). Some of the best (or The best) sound I have heard ever. They fit ears sooooo well. I was feeling a bit down (having to wait to get a few things) and checked mailbox. These were in them and having them be such high-q and good fit totally made my day/week/month.

If I could afford, I would prob order another pair (which would be unneccessary).

I went through two pairs of skullcandy earbuds before these and they broke. I love the case.

One of my first music stereos was JVC. I loved that, hadn't seen that brand much at all and am stoked to reconnect with that with easily best earbuds (100s of times better than apples. at least 10-20 times better than skullcandy's) ever had. Sweet!
