Product Description

It's true, you can spend a small fortune on headphones. If you don't have that kind of cash, then you'll want to get the beast deal you can. Check out Samson's SR850 studio reference headphones. These semi-open-back headphones give you the kind of detail and quality resolution you'd expect from a pair of high-end headphones, yet they cost half as much as most studio 'phones. Their oversized drivers and sound-diffusing design provide extraordinary frequency response, yet SR850s don't deliver the overwhelming (and fake) low end that can distort the music you're listening to. That makes SR850s a great choice for anything from critical listening to simply hearing the details of your favoring tunes.

 A really great buy! November 12, 2011
I picked up a set of these recently and have found that I really enjoy owning them. They borrow a lot from classic AKG headphones in terms of styling and construction but the sound is not the same. Doing some research online, you will find that the drivers are a different diameter than AKG's. They have a little more high end emphasis than the AKG K240's (also own). The high end is something that K240's lack, or rather don't exaggerate. While you can tell that Samson cuts some corners on the SR850 (how could they NOT?) the build quality is excellent and likely to impress most people considering the price point. The auto adjusting strap works just great. It allows the headphones to instantly adjust to anyone's head size. Thanks AKG! The earpads are very comfortable and they sit off of your ears enough that most peoples lobes aren't going to touch the vinyl or be bothered. The earpads will smell for a little while, but they are quite nice. I've had no problems leaving these on for hours and hours. The SR850's are very low impedance and can easily be driven by personal music players like iPods, Sansas, smartphones etc. Because of the low impedance though, noisy sources will let some hiss through the headphones more often than on higher impedance phones. Even my K240's at 55ohm are a little quieter with hiss. Its not a deal breaker.

They also seem to benefit from some play time, mine did anyway.

All in all, they do some really incredible things with music. Things that headphones at this price shouldn't have the right to do! They have great high end sizzle, beautiful open air sound stage, and deep natural bass. I'm very very impressed and would recommend a pair to anyone looking for a nice set of open back headphones.

I use these headphones for my normal home PC use, either for gaming, movies, music, podcasts, and audio editing. They're very comfy and soft. I was unsure how they would adjust to my head, since I've never owned a pair like this before. They feel great. The cups can get warm over the ears, but honestly, I can wear these for a good 4 hour+ gaming session and not feel uncomfortable wearing these. The Samsons are not fully closed (as indicated by the product description), so without sound coming through them I can still slightly hear external audio (i.e. hum from the computer fans, or the TV audio next to me). I feel like I should invest in a headphone hanger or something because I feel bad just lying them on top of my computer desk. My only complaint is that the cable runs a little long, but any cable tie can fix that no sweat. And these are fantastic for the $50 price point. They don't look or feel cheap, and they are quite durable.

Straight out of the box typing this review while listening to the highest quality .wave music i got. well what can i say, these are definitely light, they look cheaply made, but judging from the feel of them I'd say they're strong (guess we'll see in time). now for the importance of sound because we all know that these are not pretty, not beautiful in any way... out of the box, these headphones seem a little harsh on the ears (mostly in highs), ears started ringing shorty after trying them at a high volume to see how they would sound. now after dumbing* down the level to about volume level 38 they seem good, just right for now, not too harsh but on the limits (but once again, haven't burnt them in yet and I will update with a comment once i do. first thoughts on these, are why is the ambient noise so easy to hear, like a high powered fan in the room, but then again these ARE SEMI-OPEN headphones so i mean i don't blame them in any way... overall, i would definitely mix projects with these in studio use, I've listened to about two separate mixed down projects and they sound pretty good, so I mean i was kinda expecting alot more out of these than the pair of headphones i currently own, but i mean they are way better sounding, but just feel like i would want to be in a closed environment while listening to these (ex: passive/active noise cancelling, makes you feel like your IN the music or its right there with you... these headphones do not have this effect, it feels like your listening to well "headphones" lol. but they do sound good.) the cord is long, the gold plated plug is simple sweet, makes you feel like yes, they did think about quality when making these (the larger tip screws onto the smaller one). once again listening to music whilst typing this review, they do get warm on ear but are tolerable so that's not yet a bother to me. comfort wise, they could be a little smaller NOT MUCH, but just a Lil bit, but the self adjusting headband *Genius*, i like. and well that's all I've got to say hence far.
Hope this is helpful from an out of box point of view.

I purchased these headphones because my old pair of plantronics gamecom 777's snapped in half. I decided to get a good pair this time and researched headphones on Head-fi.org.
after a while of researching I decided that this was probably the best one for my use and is also the cheapest. I was not dissapointed at all. The sound quality is great and the headphones are extremely comfortable! The extra long cable allows me to reach around my desk and into the mini audio port on my computer. The screw on 1/4 inch adapter seems really well made but I have not used it yet. The headphones are so good, I would have easily payed $100 for them.
